Late Saturday afternoon, I cycle over to Arielle’s house to hang out. It’s one of those days where you aren’t sure what to wear as we slide from summer into autumn. The sky is clear blue, without that haze of humidity that seemed to hang over us the last few weeks.

I park my bike in the driveway, noticing all the cameras and lights they’ve added since the last time I was here. There’s one of those camera doorbells at the front door. I ring it and then start making funny faces into the camera.

She answers the doorbell, laughing. “You realize my parents have the app on their phones and they can watch your little performance, right?”

“Shoot. Me. Now,” I say with a groan. “Can you erase it?”

She shakes her head, grinning. “Why would I do that? It was funny,” she says, leading me into the kitchen.

“As long as your parents think it’s funny, and not that you’re dating some weirdo.”

“Well …” she says.

“Hilarious,” I say, but I can’t suppress a smile.

“Can I get you something to drink before we watch the movie?” she asks. “I already made popcorn.”

“Water’s fine,” I say. “Oh! Wait! I have a present for you!”

I reach into my backpack and pull out a small loaf, wrapped in foil with a little ribbon around it. “L’Shanah Tovah. Hopefully the new year will be better than the dumpster fire you’ve been dealing with since you moved here.”

Arielle’s eyes soften as she takes it from me. “It has been pretty awful,” she agrees. Her lips curve into a smile as she reads the label—Honey Cake by Jake: Making your life sweeter one bite at a time.

“Did you make this?” she asks, her eyes wide. “For real?”

I know I’m blushing, because my face suddenly feels like it’s a zillion degrees. “Uh … yeah.”

She unwraps it and takes out a plate and a knife to cut it up, sneaking a little bite to taste after she’s cut off the first slice.

“Wow, my life already feels sweeter!” she says. “Is this magic honey cake?”

“I will never tell my secrets!” I say. “But I’m glad … I know things have been all kind of messed up since you moved here. I hate what Declan did to you. I just wish I could prove it was him.”

She cuts more cake, avoiding my gaze. “My parents were talking about if Mom, Bobby, and I should move in with my grandparents in New Jersey for a little while. Until they can be sure that it’s safe for us here.”

My fury at Declan flares hotter. If Arielle ends up moving back to Jersey because of him … I don’t know what I’ll do. But right now, I’m alone with her and I refuse to let him ruin it. So I swallow down the anger and focus on the girl standing in front of me.

“This is totally selfish of me—I’ll repent for that on Yom Kippur, promise—but I don’t want you to go,” I admit.

Her eyes meet mine.
